Alpha Kappa Alpha, Sorority, Inc. has implemented the UNA/USA Global Classrooms Project to prepare today’s youth for an increasingly global and complex society. “Through this initiative, AKA members will work with high school students in partnership with the UNA-USA staff to expand understanding of the United Nations’ mission and focus.”
To kick off the UNA/USA Global Classroom Project each chapter was charged with educating the local community on UN policies. MEO chapter selected two UN issues to target each with a focus on the USA and Africa. The selected issues were:
- October 11th – International Day of the Girl Child
- Crisis in Africa: On African Child Day, UN Education Envoy Urges Focus on Kidnapped Nigerian Schoolgirls
To help create awareness, members gathered on October 24, 2014 and baked sugar cookies in the shape of the USA and Africa. Information on the selected program targets were attached to each cookie. Cookies were passed out in the local communities to familiarize them with the program targets.
